Two things that non-Sheffield folk associate with Sheffield are steel and knives / cutlery / blades (cutting, not football).

As a Sheffield native, I take a keen interest and its fair to say that over the years, I have been to my fair share of talks/lectures on steel, cutlery making and various sorts of knife making (and I’m looking forward to my up and coming full day blacksmithing course).

Yesterday's talk by Simon Maillet (@simonchefknife) at Kelham Island Museum (@sheffmuseums) really was on another level.

Simon explained with enthusiasm how he wanted to find out how people would use the tools he crafted so before making his first knife, he worked as a chef for a year.

The steel selection and fire welding process was then explained with accompanying part-processed materials following which Simon detailed the forging, heat-treating, grinding and abrasive process. It was great to then hear about the ‘Trash Knife’ recycling process and accompanying stamp.

I know what's already on next year's Christmas list…
