Writer's picture: Simon HollisSimon Hollis

Sheffield Historic Buildings Trust members Brian Holmshaw, Alice Ullathorne and Simon Hollis met with Sheffield Museums Chief Executive, Kim Streets this week at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet.

Some photos of Abbeydale from 2022:

Photo 2 – the dam backing onto the Tilt Forge and the Crucible Furnace on the south side of the site.

Photos 3 and 4 – photos of the courtyard looking north-east towards the packing shop and south towards the forges.

Photo 5 – a grinder straddling the wooden horsing to put an edge on a scythe blade.

Photo 6 – I Mech E plaque dedicated to Huntsman’s Crucible Furnace and Tilt Hammers, the furnace is the worlds oldest surviving example (1829).

Photo 7 – discarded crucible pots – depending on who you speak to, these are reckoned to last between 3 and 7 firings in the furnace. It was commonplace around Sheffield to see these piled up around old works sites.

Photo 8 – the beautiful roof structure in the Grinding Hull.

Photo 9 – the Crucible Furnace. Clay to make the crucibles was trodden in the room below here.
