September 2022, The Sheffield Society of Architects and Sheffield Civic Trust hosted an afternoon of history and debate on the Grade II Listed former Cole Brothers (John Lewis for those non-Sheffielders) building in Barkers Pool.
Leonora Simmonite and Simon Chadwick speaking
The building was designed by prominent architects Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall in 1961 and construction spanned 1963 and 1964.
It was great to be able to examine copies of the original hand-drawn YRM plans which felt less clinical than modern CAD/REVIT renders.
Cambridge University/Studio KA then presented the findings of projects undertaken by their students.
Hallamshire Historic Buildings have prepared an excellent history of Cole Brothers which can be read here.
The full listing entry can be viewed on the Historic England website here.
