A weekend trip took me to Great Malvern (one of the four areas that make up Malvern). In the centre is Great Malvern Priory, a Grage I Listed former Benedictine monastery dating back from 1075 and home to the largest installation of C15 stained glass in England.
The patchwork of different colours of stone are unusual and add even more character to the building.
The East entrance and porch are said to be the inspiration for the Wardrobe in the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. I forgot to take a photo of the Aslans head on display.
In earlier posts, I have detailed the damage that corroding ironwork can do to the host masonry. Here, we can see that a stone column has been repaired where the iron fixings had damaged it.
Around the back of the Priory is the Great Malvern Museum, a rather striking building with a gothic 4-centred arch and a mass of tracery detail. At £1 entry, it's also excellent value for money!
In the final photo, The Abbey Hotel’s magnificent Dutch-style façade can be seen covered in ivy. Having looked at the front elevation on Google Streetview, I wish I had gone round the front too, but got to save something for next time I guess.
