Kedleston Hall, Derby
Built by Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Baron of Scarsdale to designs by Robert Adam between 1759 - 1765, intended as a ‘temple of the arts’.
Built as a showpiece as opposed to a family home, the family still live in the east wing, with the centre being for entertainment/show and the west once home to the servants and kitchens.
Photo 1 - front elevation showing east, centre and west wings.
Photo 2 - Marble Hall - designed to promote a sense of grandeur, of the open courtyard of a Roman villa. Although called the Marble Ha
ll, the columns are made from alabaster and the floor Hopton Wood Stone.
Photo 3 - Saloon - the dome, inspired by the Pantheon in Rome rises to 62 feet.
Photos 4 and 5 - got to love a cantilever stone staircase and lantern roof.
Photo 6 - Rear elevation.
