Lime and The Big Freeze

Writer's picture: Simon HollisSimon Hollis

Back out on site in Harthill this morning with @edwards_restoration to check on the lime works undertaken last year following the freezing weather over the last month.

The first big freeze after the works is the real test of whether the lime work has been successful or not. Needless to say, the works have stood the test of winter.

The photos are of the neighbouring property which, unfortunately, is not fairing so well. The cementitious mortar is causing excessive moisture stress to this soft Rotherham Red sandstone and the accelerated decay is frightening to see. Sections of this wall will now require supporting and partial rebuilding with reclaimed stone as this is past the point of rotation/repair.

I can't emphasise enough that you need to know what you're doing when working on traditionally constructed buildings. If this property had been left alone, it would have fared better than being inappropriately repaired.
