Moisture Detection*

Writer's picture: Simon HollisSimon Hollis

I’ve tried, unsuccessfully to date this Protimeter Surveymini which I purchased recently. It looks to be older than the ones shown in Malcolm Hollis’s Surveying Buildings published in 1983. Any informed guesses from my connections?

I wonder if by this point anyone knew the amount of damage the incorrect use of these electronic resistance meters would cause to traditionally constructed buildings? How many millions of pounds would be spent on unnecessary ‘remedial’ work? How many homeowners would be forced to obtain worthless pieces of paper with ’10 year guarantee’ written across the top?

A re-write of the headline to “The person who claims to identify the cause of dampness using only a Protimeter will never get the answer right” is long overdue.

*This can only accurately be used to measure the moisture content in freshly felled timber.
