New Don Glassworks, Mexborough

Writer's picture: Simon HollisSimon Hollis

Another engaging and informative talk by Ashley Tuck at Wessex Archaeology yesterday evening as part of the South Yorkshire Industrial Heritage Society winter lecture series.

Ashley presented on Wessex’s dig of the site as part of the enabling works for the Lidl supermarket.

This site is not featured in Dennis Ashursts definitive book ‘The History of South Yorkshire Glass’ (1991) likely as it was confused with the next door but one site, also named Don Glass Works.

Work at the Catcliffe Glass Cone (photo 3) and the dig at Hollis Croft (photo 4) were also covered, in part to illustrate the invention and workings of the William Siemens regenerator furnace (photo 7).

Photo 8 is of a cod bottle and marbles which were made at the Don Glassworks.
