I am really rather fond of the design and robustness of the Speedy Calcium Carbide meters that Thomas Ashworth (now part of GE) of Burnley first produced around 100 years ago. I have amassed half a dozen or so of them over the last couple of years. The last one I purchased from eBay came with this superb cylinder of re-agent. I love that someone took the time to design the artwork and that it has survived in quite good condition for probably fifty years?

Compared with the modern tin, which is utilitarian and let's be honest, far less interesting!
I emptied the Calcium Carbide out of the old tin and it still had a pretty violent reaction with water, even after all this time!
See more about the Calcium Carbide meter on the How page of my website.
