The SPAB in Sheffield

The end of a busy week spent preparing for and hosting The SPAB Scholars and Fellows on Friday and then together with the rest of the SPAB Yorkshire Committee hosting our first ‘Introduction to Lime Pointing’ practical day, both making use of the excellent facilities at Whiteley Woods OAC in Ringinglow.

On Friday, SPAB Scholars and SPAB Fellows had a site tour including a briefing and inspection of the chimney repair project that conservation bricklayer Tracy Brindley is presently finishing off. The afternoon was spent learning more about building pathology, finishing with a group task on a timber truss repair.

On Saturday we were on-site bright and early to set up for the day. The attendees spent the morning session learning about the history of Whiteley Woods, the recent project to refurbish Goodwin Cottage and a theory-based introduction to lime before the practical sessions began. Tracy explained the hot mixing process followed by a mixing demonstration. After lunch, the group got on the tools as they practised raking out and re-pointing with hand tools before we went through brick replacement and aftercare.

We’ll be organising more of these sessions next year, if you are interested, please email The SPAB Yorkshire group - spabyorkshire@gmail.com
