The spring weather has allowed good progress to be made on the re-roofing of Thorpe Hall.
A green/grey natural Brazilian slate has been chosen which is a good fit for the stonework and will set the lead detailing off nicely. On the dormer windows, the lead cheeks have been replaced with hung slates to try and mitigate the expansion and contraction that occurs, particularly in Spring and Autumn when we can have 20 plus degrees in the daytime and minus figures overnight. The lead barrel detailing on the left-hand dormer will be replaced. I can’t wait to see Joe and the team get to work on the steeply raked pyramid roof. Charlie and Emma have some great ideas for the lead finial and mop stick work too.
Code 5 lead has been used for the valleys and soakers, which will hopefully do many more generations of good service.
Often overlooked and of critical importance is lightning protection. Air terminals have been attached to each chimney stack and down conductors are running under the roof covering.
I'm working on another project nearby, so will hopefully get a couple more drone photos before the roof is finished.
